Steven Gerrard says England must improve if they are to have any chance of winning this summer's World Cup. Sven Goran Eriksson's side were amongst the favourites before the competition began, but Gerrard believes that is no longer the case.

"No, I don't think so - our form as a team has got to improve," said the Liverpool captain.

"We need to hit top form pretty quickly. There are still a couple of gears to go into."

England were widely criticised for their performance against Trinidad & Tobago despite a 2-0 victory, but Gerrard believes the most important thing was the three points needed to advance.

"It's pleasing to be in the last 16," he said. "It was really difficult out there for an hour and we were finding them really difficult to break down. They got a lot of luck on the night."
