Talking Say it with a stole

Say it with a stole

Tuesday, December 12, 2006

Every woman owns a shawl, be it thick, coarse wool in plain black or the finest cashmere, edged with swarovski crystal work.

The shawl originated in Kashmir as a garment of pure functionality. It covered one's head, shoulders and arms, keeping you warm. And for the women it was also a garment of religious and cultural conservatism.

Today, Kashmir is one of the biggest exporters of Pashmina and cashmere stoles and shawls, all of them to serve one purpose… style.

The simple length of material has crossed cultures, borders, time frames and transcended its most basic purpose to become one of the hallmarks of a great wardrobe.

A stole, scarf or shawl is now pure style. The kind that will never be ‘so last season.’

Available in every conceivable colour plus the hues in between, in all sorts of shapes and sizes, made from fabrics on a diverse spectrum ranging between thin light cottons and organzas to pure wool and satin, for occasions ranging from prayer to evening wear or even to complete a bridal trousseau, the shawl or stole is a must-have.

Silk

A definitive of classic luxury is the pure silk shawl. Hand-woven by highly skilled artisans, the finely woven silk stripes render each piece with a texture and beauty not easily matched.

Silk shawls come in a variety of sizes and dimensions and in almost any colour imaginable. Patterns of block-printed or hand made designs, ranging from anything between a small delicate floral print to a bold geometric design provides you with endless choices.

Stoles are further dressed up by extensive embellishments of embroidery, bead work, tie-dye and appliqué work.

Comfortable, lavish and the strongest among the natural fabrics, silk is wearable across the most months of the year.

Pashmina

From the conception stage onwards, the shawl was meant to serve the primary purpose of being a warm, protective garment. Its softness its trademark, Pashmina has become the pick of the trendy, to fight off the cold and still be in traffic-stopping style.

Pashmina yarn is spun from the hairs found on the underbelly of the ibex goat, commonly known as the Chyangra. The goat is an inhabitant of the Himalayan region at 14,000 ft above the sea level.

A pure pashmina shawl is known to be able to pass through the circumference of a wedding ring, proving its softness and the purity of the fibre.

The shawls and stoles woven, embroidered and detailed in Kashmir are exported and have found a huge niche in the international markets.

Though a pure pashmina stole or shawl is very expensive, you can get one which is blended with rabbit fur, wool and sometimes silk, at a fraction of the cost.

But if there is ever a truly good investment in a piece of fashion, the pure pashmina shawl is one of them.
