Coalition to decide fate of LG system: Shahbaz LAHORE, April 5: PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif says coalition parties’ leadership will decide about the abolition of the local government system and revival of the old system in the province. Talking to newsmen after the PPP-PML-N meeting on Punjab government formation on Saturday, Shahbaz ruled out any flour crisis in the province, adding that the new government would ensure proper supply of the commodity in every nook and corner. He said the Nawaz League had reservations about MQM’s joining the federal cabinet and demanded a transparent inquiry into the May 12 Karachi killings to know who was responsible for the massacre. He also stressed the need for the restoration of deposed judges in accordance with the Murree Declaration. The PML-N leader said an IT university for girls would be set up in the Chief Minister’s House for which the caretaker government had been asked to form a committee so that the new government could ensure early implementation of the plan. Shahbaz said easy access to education would be ensured in Punjab besides the introduction of a uniform curricula in public and private educational institutions. The new government, he said, would also take effective measures to rectify the law and order situation in the province. The PML-N president also denounced Pervaiz Elahi’s statement about a forward bloc in Nawaz League, and said: “We will ensure transparency in the accountability process.” Present on the occasion, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar told journalists that all matters between the two parties had been sorted out amicably.—APP PM asked not to abolish LB system By Our Correspondent QUETTA, April 5: Nazims of 11 districts of Balochistan have demanded of Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani not to abolish the district government system, saying the move would not be in the interest of the people. The nazims were addressing a joint press conference at the Quetta Press Club here on Saturday. Speaking on behalf of the other nazims, Quetta City Nazim Mir Maqbool Ahmed Lehri said that the district government system had been introduced to resolve problems faced by the people at grassroots level and it had proved to be very successful and the PPP-led coalition government should strengthen it instead of abolishing it.He said district governments were facing financial problems as they had no funds to pay even salaries of their employees. The nazims said that the federal government had announced Rs10 million for development projects in each district, but the amount had not been released so far, creating problems for the district governments. Mr Lehri said that President Pervez Musharraf had announced a development package of one billion rupees for the Quetta City, but the amount had not been released as yet. Other nazims present on the occasion were: Maulana Kamaluddin, nazim of Pishin; Adam Khan Achakzai, nazim of Qila Abdullah; Ali Gul Marri, nazim of Kohlu; Dilawar Khan Kakar, nazim of Ziarat; Nadir Khan, nazim of Musakhel; Haji Muhammad Aslam, nazim of Sherani; Maulana Anwaruddin, nazim of Qila Saifullah; Khair Jan Baloch, nazim of Awaran; Shaukat Baloch, nazim of Kharan; and Sardar Naseer Musuwani, nazim of Khuzdar. Farooq Sattar terms Afgan’s manhandling as explicit act of terrorismUpdated at :Wednesday, April 09, 2008 ![]() KARACHI: Deputy Convener Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s Coordination Committee, Dr. Farooq Sattar termed the Lahore incident of Dr. Sher Afgan’s manhandling as explicit act of terrorism. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday night, Dr. Sattar said MQM condemns the deplorable incident in strongest terms. “The attack on Dr. Afgan was carried out by those who present themselves as the representatives and promoters of justice and those who are taking forward the so called movement of restoration of judiciary,” he said. “These are the same people who attacked me in Islamabad months ago,” he maintained. Dr. Farooq Sattar said today the country witnessed killing of law and justice. Dr. Sher Afgan who is a heart patient was badly attacked by these so-called flag bearers of law and justice. |
