When Lightning Strikes...
If you’re caught in a thunder storm and the hair on the back of your neck stands up, be careful: You’re about to be a victim of a lightning strike. Quick, crouch on the balls of your feet and don’t put your hands on the ground. This will help keep the current from traveling through your body if lightning strikes the ground nearby.
One way to tell how close the last strike was to you: Count the seconds between the flash and the thunderclap and divide the result by five. That number is the distance in miles. If the lightning is within six miles – a 30 count – take cover inside. If you’re hiking, get to low ground and crouch on your backpack – that’ll keep you safe from electrical currents spreading over the nearby ground.
