You are by ‘nature’ a peaceful, stable and silent soul. But right now, as the ‘world’ tells you of its various problems and sorrows it’s likely you feel far from being peaceful, being silent and being stable. The purpose of meditation is not to work hard, it is simply to regain awareness of the silent and stable soul that is you, know the peace that is your nature and allow love to emerge naturally from your heart. And in doing so the world loses its power to trouble you.
To some that sounds like giving up and doing nothing! But the purpose of meditation is not to do nothing and give up all your worldly responsibilities. It is to regain your true and natural inner state, so that you can draw on your silence power to judge clearly what you need to do. It is to use the silence power which is present inside you, to be like a rock that is smashed by the waves of the sea and yet remains stable and unmoved. It is to remain unmoved by the noise of the world around you, which is constantly demanding your attention and your energy. Meditation is a way of slowing quietening the monkey mind.
But you are unlikely to do this until you feel that a) you’ve had enough of that noisy world or b) your mind seems to be driving you crazy or c) you’re tired of your emotional exhaustion or d) you have had a small taste of your inner peace and power or e) you follow the still small inner voice that invites you to sit down, be quiet and just listen.
