Fabulous fifties make-up





Marilyn Monroe used a blend of white powder and Vaseline to achieve the flawless base she is renowned for. Fortunately we can achieve the same effect and increase staying power by using a combination of foundation and concealer. Undemanding make-up such as this takes little effort to apply but the trick to replicating it is in the application!
Start by applying a medium to light sheer foundation with a sponge all over the face, including eyelids and lips. Blend the base into the neck and forehead to prevent obvious lines.





Conceal under the eyes in a light to natural tone and reduce any redness around the nose or cheeks in the same way. Darken the brows with a brow pencil and define the natural arch of the brow as much as possible.







Dust a generous layer of translucent powder over the face to set the base and to provide an overall matt effect. The sheer foundation will complement most skin tones if this make-up changes with heat or perspiration.

Apply a light creamy powder shadow to the lids up to the brows with a sponge or brush.



Apply a generous line of black liquid eyeliner to the upper lid and slightly exaggerate the line at the outer edge. For a truly stunning effect apply strip or individual false lashes before applying a generous coat of black mascara to the upper lids. A finer or clear mascara is used on the lower lashes as these are not defined.







Lightly apply a peach cream blush to the upper outer cheek area, avoiding the 'apple' of the cheek to create a barely there appearance. Finally apply a deep red lip liner and matching lipstick to fill the lips and try to make them as naturally big as possible.
And lastly... Beauty spots were very popular in the 1950s so for authenticity you may wish to apply one with a black or brown eye pencil!
