No doubt you've spent a fortune during the festive season, and you're feeling as if you can't afford your usual beauty routine. Well, don't despair – raid your kitchen for ingredients and try some home-made recipes that will restore your radiance!
Face
Exfoliators
# Grind two tablespoons of almonds in a blender. Add two teaspoons of milk, half a teaspoon of flour and half a teaspoon of honey. Mix until a thick paste is formed. Rub into the skin and rinse off with warm water.
# Moisten face with a warm facecloth. Then apply a mixture of half a cup of uncooked oats, one tablespoon of honey, one tablespoon of cider vinegar and one teaspoon of ground almonds (avoid the eye area). Let the mixture dry on the skin before removing with a warm, damp facecloth.
# Place one cup of dried orange peels, one cup of cooked oats and one cup of almonds in a food processor, and blend until the mixture is a fine powder. Place some in the palm of your hand and moisten with a few drops of warm water.
# Rub paste onto the face with a gentle, circular motion. Rinse with warm water.
Face masks
Most face masks are left on the face for 15-20 minutes and washed off with warm water, followed by a cold rinse.
# A mask of grated apple mixed with a little honey is an excellent remedy for pimples.
# Add one apricot to a little warm olive oil to form a spreadable paste. This is excellent for dry skin!
# Mash one banana and spread on the face for a soothing, cleansing and moisturising face mask. Rinse with warm water.
# For oily skin, make a paste using yeast and a small amount of warm water.
# Apply raw, grated carrots to the face while lying down (a little lemon juice may also be added). Perfect for oily complexions!
# Purée half a cucumber in a blender. Add one tablespoon of plain yoghurt and apply to the face. Leave for 30 minutes and rinse well.
# For oily and blemished skin, massage a small amount of slightly heated honey into the skin.
# If your skin's oily, squeeze half a lemon and mix the juice with one beaten egg. Apply to the face, avoiding the area around the eyes. Leave on overnight, or for at least 15 minutes during the day, before rinsing with warm water.
Cleansers
# Mix one teaspoon of warm honey with one tablespoon of milk or cream to cleanse dry skin.
# Grind almonds to a fine powder in a blender. Wet the face, then rub on the powder and rinse.
# For dry skin, make a purée of one banana, one papaya and one peach or avocado. Apply to the skin. Leave on for at least 20 minutes before rinsing with warm water.
# Cleanse dry skin with natural mayonnaise (available from health shops). Massage into the skin, leave on for 15-20 minutes and rinse thoroughly with warm water.
# For instant radiance, combine a handful of strawberries, a handful of grapes, half a pear and one orange in a blender. Apply a thin layer of honey to the face, followed by the fruit mixture. Leave on for 30 minutes before rinsing with warm water.
Eyes
# For puffy and swollen eyes, make a wet compress using four tablespoons of freshly grated raw potato. Place on the eyes for about 15 minutes before rinsing with cold water.
# Place slightly damp, warm teabags on the eyes to reduce the signs of a late night out.
# To lighten dark circles, cut a fresh fig in two and place one piece over each eye.
# To soothe tired, irritated eyes, cut a cucumber and apply cool slices over each eye.
# To clear up tired, bloodshot eyes, soak cotton wool in cold skim milk. Place cotton wool over eyes for 10 minutes. Rinse entire face with warm water, then again with cool water.
