CNT-An approach in sub-Molecular Electronics
By M.Y.Tonse Carbon nanotube is a new form of carbon, configurationally equivalent to 2-D plane sheet rolled into a tube about the width of a typical protein molecule.. Because they conduct electricity, they have been said as ready-made molecular-scale wires for making electronic circuitry.Some nanotubes behave as semiconductors, like silicon; others carry electric currents like metal wires. Already, fundamental elements of computer circuits such as transistors have been made from individual carbon nanotubes.Carbon nano tube has also founded variety of applications to create future nanoelectronics devices, circuits, and computers.Carbon nano tube involves nanoscience and nanotechnological process in its making.A technique has now been developed that will reveal an individual nanotube's structure and then allow it to be placed in a position on a surface with an accuracy of about 100 nanometres, a fraction of the width of a human blood cell. The nanotubes are grown on a perforated ceramic grid, and tubes lying across the holes are examined in an electron microscope to deduce their atomic structures. Then the researchers use two needle-fine tips like tweezers to pick up a single tube under the microscope and put back down on another surface.CNT exhibits extraordinary mechanical properties: the Young's modulus is over 1 Tera Pascal and is as stiff as diamond. The estimated tensile strength is 200 Giga Pascal. These properties are ideal for reinforced composites, nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS).NEMS hold a promise in itself to revelutionise the future. Carbon Nanotube is the basic building block of NEMS systems .NEMS is defined as the creation of tools and systems at nanoscale.A few important applications are nanosensors,nanocrystal,nanofilters,nanorobotics,n anostructured materials.
