positive thinking, a myth or a reality ?

I have been wondering about this phrase " positive thinking "

what exactly is positive thinking ?
is it assuring ourselves every moment that we are capable of doing things, that we are loved, strong ?
if this is positive thinking, then :|,
if we already are capable, strong, then is there a reason to assue ourselves ?
or is it because one doubts about themselves and uses this word to teach their brain they are positive ?

afterall, is assuring the brain a sign of weakness, rather than strength ? aint it ? or

I'd like to read views for and against, in a mature way..
