    Plans How To Stop Smoking

By smoking you`re not only putting yourself at risk but also your unborn baby. Take a few things into consideration the next time you take a puff of your cigarette. When you smoke carbon monoxide and nicotine pass into your lungs and bloodstream. This means that your baby gets less oxygen and cannot grow as well as it should, the nicotine also makes your baby`s heart beat faster. By giving up you will reduce the risk of your baby being born earlier then it should, having any breathing problems, being under weight and you will reduce the risk of cot death. For your baby`s sake you should give up smoking now to give him/her the healthiest start in life. Brahoo has put together an action plan to help you kick the habit. All you have to do is print it off and keep it where you can see it at all times. Good luck

    Planning to stop

    - The first thing to do is to pick a day to stop smoking. (When choosing a day to stop smoking, make sure that it`s a day with which you won`t have any stress, or people around you that smoke. Maybe the begining of a working week will be best for you, or a holiday is always a good time to give up.)

    - The night before. (Before going to bed throw out all cigarettes and ashtrays)

    - The big day. (You have to break the habit of that first cigarette and don`t drink tea or coffee as this will make you want a cigarette. Go for a walk or a jog instead, or have a relaxing bath. But don`t have a cigarette.)

    - Ask for help. (If your partner or members of your family or friend's smoke, tell them what you are doing and ask them for help and understanding. Ask them to not smoke around you or offer you a cigarette. If your partner smokes maybe you could give up together.)

    - Break your smoking habits. (If you smoke while, having a cup of tea/coffee, on the phone or after a meal do something different. Drink water or orange juice, chew sugar free gum after a meal or when you are on the phone. It would be a good idea to buy sugar free gum in bulk.)

    - Thing to avoid when giving up smoking

    - Avoid public places where smokers frequent

    - Don`t drink alcohol for the first few weeks as alcohol is also addictive and this will make you want a cigarette

    - People tend to eat more when they give up smoking "DON`T" this will make your weight increase and make you miserable

    - Things to do when giving up smoking

    - Break your smoking habits

    - Keep active, try exercising, swimming, lightly jogging. Ask your midwife or doctor what type of exercise you can do while you are pregnant.

    - Take up a new hobby, something that will keep you busy. (Knitting, crafts .etc.)

    - At the begining of each day congratulate yourself on having made it through another day. Make your goal to get through today without smoking.

    - Write a list of all the reasons why you want to stop smoking and pin them up all around your home/work place as a constant reminder of why you are stopping smoking. Here is a few you could use to help you, try adding a few of your own.

    - I want to give my baby a healthy start in life

    - I want to improve my own health

    - I don`t want my children to become smokers

    - I want to save money

    - I don`t want to be addicted to anything

    - I don`t want to smell of smoke

    - Others
Every week, month that you do without a cigarette reward yourself with a gift (flowers, your favorite bottle of perfume .etc.) or you could save your money for a holiday or something that you have always wanted

    Drink milk to quit smoking!

    Thursday, April 05, 2007

Milk not only does the body good it may also help you quit smoking, says a study.

Consuming milk makes the taste of cigarette bad and by making a few modifications to the diet one can make quitting bit easier, said the study published in April 2007 issue of the journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research.

The study is said to be the first to explore the taste-altering effects of food and beverages on cigarette palatability.

The study examined 209 smokers and asked them to name items that worsen or enhance the taste of cigarettes.

Nineteen percent of them reported that dairy products, such as milk or cheese, worsen the taste of cigarettes; 14 percent reported non-caffeinated beverages, such as water or juice; and 16 percent reported fruits and vegetables.

Forty-four percent of them reported that alcoholic beverages enhance the taste of cigarettes; 45 percent reported caffeinated beverages, such as tea, cola and coffee; and 11 percent reported meat.

Identifying which components of foods and beverages ruin the taste of cigarettes could lead to new treatments to deter smoking, said co-investigator Jed E. Rose of the Duke University Medical Center study.

The researchers are now looking at the possibility of using the chemical silver acetate, known to alter the taste of cigarettes, to help smokers quit.

The additive could be given in the form of a gum or a lozenge as part of smoking cessation treatment, according to a science portal, EurekAlert.

    Milk Curbs Smoking...

Did you know that the health benefits of milk can also extend to curb smoking?

Well, this has been discovered in a recent research on nicotine and tobacco. And the boon here is that the after taste of drinking milk can worsen the taste of cigarettes and thereby deter the urge to light one.

In this study, the researchers asked 209 people to name the food items that worsen or improve the taste of cigarettes. Majority of them said that dairy products, like milk or cheese worsen the taste of cigarettes. The other food products that adversely affected the taste of cigarettes for smokers, were non-alcoholic beverages and fruits/vegetables. On the other hand, items like caffeinated beverages, alcohol and even meat improved the taste of cigarettes.

Identifying the components in the taste spoilers can help researchers discover an effective medical solution to the growing health hazard of tobacco.

Until the medical fraternity discovers finds an effective packaging for this component, either in the form of gum or lozenges, pick up the carton of milk from your refrigerator or a pop a piece of cheese in your mouth, when you feel the urge to light up the cancer stick.

    Smoking impairs ligament healing

    Thursday, June 21, 2007
    14:12 IST

Latest research shows that cigarette smoking could impair the healing of injuries to the ligament - a short, strong band of tissue that connects bones to other bones to form a joint.

Studying mice with knee ligament injuries, the researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine discovered that smoking impairs the recruitment of cells to the injury site and delays healing following ligament-repair surgery.

The soft tissue healing that occurs following ligament injuries occurs in stages. There is an immediate pooling of blood near the injury that causes swelling right away.

This initial response is followed by several days of inflammation in which cells called macrophages flock to the injury site and secrete substances called cytokines and chemokines.

Those, in turn, recruit more cells to assist in healing.

This process lasts for several days. The final stage of healing involves remodelling of the tissue and can continue for months and even years.

To look at the effects of smoking the researchers used a system in which mice are placed inside smoking chambers six days per week, reported online edition of the Newswise .

The mice didn't actually have cigarettes in their mouths, but they got enough passive fumes to "smoke" two cigarettes daily, the equivalent of a person smoking about four packs per day.

Mice were placed in the smoking chambers for two months prior to ligament surgery and then again after surgery to mimic the behaviour of humans who continue to smoke following an injury.

The researchers said their findings point to yet another reason smokers would do well to quit.
