    Juicy Facts!
100% fruit juices may have about as many calories as colas and other sweetened soft drinks – even if they also contain vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and if the whole fruit is used, some fibre. Still, you should limit how much you drink – and ‘eat’ more whole fruits instead of juice, because they retain all their nutrients and are more filling. Whatever sweetened beverages you drink, aim to get no more than about 200 calories a day from them.

    Milky Drink After Workout

After a strenuous hour at the weights, your body needs not just protein to repair the microscopic muscle tears, but also carbs to help restock energy stores.

    Ideal choice: Chocolate milk-shake.

In an Indiana University study, cyclists who drank low-fat chocolate milk after a tough racing session had improved endurance and recovered faster than those who drank an ordinary sports drink (which supplies carbs and electrolytes, but no protein).

Yet another reason to drink milk post exercise: A recent report published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition compared the benefits of milk protein to soy protein following weight training workout (Milk contains approx. 20% whey protein, 80% casein protein). Its findings: The men who consumed milk following their workout gained almost twice as much muscle as compared to the soy protein group, over a 10-week period.

    Get The Right Footwear...
    [13 Jul 2007]

As with jeans, no two pairs of running shoes are alike, even within the same brand, as each caters to the specific needs of different runners. Here are a few tips that will take the guess work out of your choice.

Assess what would be your primary activity
Running shoes are necessary only if you are running three to four times a week. Else go for the jack-of-all-trades – cross trainers.

Get your feet measured each time
Shoe sizes differ from brand to brand. So if you’re a size 7 with Reebok, chances are that for Action, you might be size 8 or even 6. The best time to get fitted is late afternoon or after a run, when feet are at their biggest. When in doubt, err on the larger side.

    Ensure a snug fit
The heel counter should sit cozily, not slip and rub. Ideally, try on shoes with the pair of socks you’ll be wearing with them. This will give you a fair idea of their fit and feel. Make sure the shoe sole flexes easily where the foot flexes. A light jog in place will aid in better judgment.

Pick a pair that offers enough wiggle room
For your toes…a gap of ¼ inch to an inch from the top is essential. Too little gap is the leading cause of the runner’s bane: black toes (too much gap is also not a good idea as the feet will keep sliding forward and bang against the toe box.)

    If you wear orthotics
Fit your shoe with them. Also choose shoes with removable insoles so you can modify or replace them with orthodontics, as and when required.

    If you’re heavily built
Look for extra cushioning and arch support to reduce impact on the shins.

    Roll with the dice
10 to 15 degrees of pronation or supination is considered normal. Since most runners develop injury either due to excessive supination (rolling out) or pronation (rolling in), pick a shoe that has extra cushioning, motion control and firm heel counter.

    Check your mileage
As a general rule, a good shoe gives you 1000 km of injury free running. That’s anywhere from 10 months to a year. Watch out for fraying of the mid sole and cracks in the outsole or the toe-box. If the shoe feels “dead” it’s time to get a new pair and retire this one for strolling in the mall.

    Long-lasting Teeth
“Brushing your teeth does not require a lot of force,” says Atlanta based Ronald Goldstein, D.D.S, author of “Change your Smile.” Doing so will erode the enamel (the outer covering of the teeth) and cause the gum tissue to recede. And would reveal the much softer cementum (covering the root), which may lead to increased chance of sensitivity, decay and tooth deformity.

How can you tell if you are brushing too hard? Check your brush. If the bristles are frayed or splayed after a few months’ use, you may be an offender. Your brush should look very much the same after 6 months as it did when you bought it (For hygiene purposes, it is advisable to change the toothbrush every three months). Likewise, flossing is healthy, but not if you garrote your gums. Move floss gently under the gums to nab food particles, then up and down each side of the tooth.
