Giorgio Armani, Chanel, Jasper Conran, Giles Deacon, Yves Saint Laurent have one thing in common. They’ve played with the powerful combination of black and white time and again.

There's nothing constant in the world of fashion. What's 'in' today is gone tomorrow. But the black and white combo has stayed forever. The fickle fashion scenario can hardly steal the zest and stylishness of these two shades.

It's the safest bet to make a fashion statement. So it came as no surprise that when Avanti Birla and Preity Zinta tried it out at an art soiree recently.

    Attractive contrasts

High contrast equals high fashion, the pairing of these two powerful basics is as reliable as it can get. One can use different variations in bold patterns or in complementary separates. "They say when in doubt, wear either white or a combination of black and white.

White gets boring after some time. If you’re in mood for a combination, opt for the universally favourite combination black and white," says designer Anita Dongre. She put together a b-‘n’-w collection for her recent show at the Lakme Fashion Week.

"It's such a versatile combination that it allows experimentation and it's easier to reinvent it," she adds

    Manhattan magic

Trends may change every day in New York, but that's the city where the combination can be seen the most. "Manhattan is the place where you find every fourth person on the street wearing black and white. It's the most tried and tested but people just don't run out of ideas to yet make it look interesting every time," Dongre says.

And who says that one can only wear it to office for work? It's a chic combination one can also carry it off for semi formal occasions.

    Indian twist

While the world uses the combination incessantly, it took an Indian designer to break the norm. Sabyasachi Mukherjee tends to team off white instead of white with black. In his recent film Babul, he gave Rani Mukherjee simple salwar kameezes with the unusual combination.
