Thread: A frozen summer

The good thing about summer heat is that it gives you the perfect excuse to try out several flavours of ice creams a number of times. This summer too a range of ice creams make their way to the market. From fruit-based ice lollies to gelatos in multiple flavours, the list is endless.

    Fruitful indulgence

Offers Chef Saby of Olive Bar and Kitchen, "The trend of experimenting with different kinds of ice creams is very strong in the European countries. However, a lot of variety can also be seen this summer with blueberry and passion fruit ice cream, and green melon ice cream."

The fruity flavours are refreshing. Chef Pavan Uppal, of Metropolitan Hotel Nikko suggests, "It's a mango season, so mango flavoured ice cream is likely to rule the roost. Other flavours that are picking up gradually are litchi and strawberry. These flavours not only make for delectable ice creams but are also hugely popular ice lollies." While fruit flavours are irresistible, mint is yet another favourite flavour.

    Gelato crazy

Gelatos are hot, sorry, cool favourites this summer. Since they are made of eggs, they are creamier and richer. Adds Chef Saby, "Since quite a few Italian restaurants have opened up, the craze for gelatos has increased considerably. A range of flavours can be suggested for this summer. These include mixed berry gelato, wild berry gelato, chilly mint gelato. Some of these can be made at home as well." However, the ones that he recommends are green melon gelato, green apple gelato, ginger, orange, wild berry gelatos as "they are relatively lighter and fit for summers".

    Sweeter than sugar

With sugar-free ice-creams coming in the market, the options for those who are health-cautious are no longer limited. Says wellness expert Shikha Sharma, "A good thing about these ice-creams is that they are made of yoghurt which is healthier than pure ice-creams in terms of cholesterol. This one is suitable for those who suffer from diabetes.

Apart from such ice creams, frozen yoghurt is also a fairly healthy deal." Adds Chef Saby, "I generally keep a box of such ice creams at home. They cater to everyone and there isn't much compromise on the taste."
