Thread: Looking good at the office

  1. #1

Dressing up for work today is much easier than it was 10 years ago.
Modern offices have more of a casual approach when it comes to the corporate working environment.

This translates as a change in the dress code as well, which is increasingly leaning towards a more semi-formal approach, rather than strictly formal, or then casual.

Take trousers, for instance. The semi-formal look is more 'in' at the moment, in terms of fabric, design and colours. Yarn-dyed stripes fashioned in light-weight fabrics are very trendy right now.

Formal trousers have also been witnessing a few 'semi-formal' adaptations by way of a low-slung waistline, asymmetric pocket openings and buttoned fly. This complements the casual yet formal office atmosphere.

Although a suit may still be the order of the day when it comes to the boardroom, shirts are seeing the emergence of rustic, neutral tones such as olive and walnut, in stripes and patterns that are suited to a semi-formal environment.
Aquatic shades, ranging from placid blues to iridescent greens, find a place in bold designs and fabrics that have a 'crushed' look. Even a pastel shirt and tie under your jacket will keep up with this colour trend.

The main fabrics of the season are linen and light cotton. The new liquid ammonia wash technology gives them a softer feel, a more polished appearance, and a lessened need of frequent ironing.

    Clean silhouettes

Keeping the semi-formal approach in mind, corporate womenswear at the moment has a clean, futuristic look to it that suits the ever-changing needs of today's business woman.
Summer and spring workwear includes not only formal silhouettes, but also casual and holiday clothes for the confident boss lady.

Aquatic hues of blue and green have a soothing effect on the mind despite hectic work schedules.

    Mix and match

Gone are the days when experimenting was taboo. Today's corporate males are comfortable in almost anything, and you won't find it uncommon for them to pair corduroy trousers with a formal shirt, or even corduroy jackets with formalwear. Khaki trousers with twills also seem to be something of a fashion statement lately.
A hot favourite at the moment is the evergreen sportswear jacket, but given the hot weather, you may prefer a lighter get-up. As previously mentioned, stripes and bold patterns are in, and neutral shades like grey are dominating the clothing scene. So make sure you step into the office in style!

    PROFESSIONAL DRESS CODE

Selecting a dress everyday for office is quite boring. You have to consider so many things and you feel as if your work life, which is a major part of your life, is boring and lifeless. Well you possibly can not wear ripped jeans and T-shirt to work but if you work place allows casual day once a week then take the most advantage of it. But frankly speaking your dress code will largely depend on your work field. Consider your own industry and corporate culture--then reconsider your wardrobe and try to put some life into it. Some handy tips:

    1. Use your personal style as a business communication tool. Your outfit speaks volumes about your professionalism, so make sure it creates the right impression. Casual dress doesn't mean you never have to iron again. Whatever you decide to wear, be sure it's wrinkle-free, in good repair, and pulled together with unifying elements like matching belts and shoes.

    2. Stand out, but blend in. A neat, tied-together look will help you stand out. Wearing too much jewellery or t-shirts with logos will also help you stand out--but not in a positive way. Clothing that distracts people and calls attention away from the business at hand is inappropriate to wear at work. While noisy bracelets might be fun to wear on evenings or weekends, they can be annoying at a team meeting.

    3. Plan ahead. Step back before you get dressed in the morning and think about what you'll be doing that day, where you'll be going, and who you'll be meeting. If you have to attend an important meeting then definitely you have to be dressed appropriately for it. As an employee, you should dress to reflect your company's culture, values, and industry.

    Classic Career Woman
Want to make a splash in the corporate world this monsoon (not literally, of course)? Designers Anita Dingre and Surily Goel and image consultant, Rukshana Eisa, tell you how…

    Anita Dongre:
When at work, full length skirts should be strictly avoided during the rains. Knee length formal skirts look very well and natural black linen cotton abric is best suited for this season, compared to other synthetic material like nylon. Short length bloomer pants and a jacket teamed with bright printed shirt, especially in cotton polyester fabric looks very stylish.

As far as colours are concerned, white is definitely a ‘no-no’ as when drenched, white transforms into a complete see through material and also gets stained very fast.

Smart rancoats in pink and umbrellas in rainbow hues add colour and style to an otherwise boring monsoon wardrobe.

    Surily Goel:
Overcoats and long jackets are very much in vogue this season. Straight cur skirts instead of flared ones, are perfect for the rains. For coats, go for colours in greys, blacks and blues.

    Rukshana Eisa:
When it comes to formal dressing, jackets should be darker than the shirts. The shirts can be in brighter colours like yellows and sky blues.

Accessories: Small, delicate pieces of jewellery go well with office wear. You can even team it up with a discreet watch. Small pearls are in vogue too. You can team it up with yellow gold embedded with coloured diamonds to add a touch of class to the formal look. One important fashion tip is to make sure that your accessories are in a single colour. Belts, shoes, bag – all should be in the same colour.

    Hair & Make up:
Hair should be kept away from the face and makeup should be minimal. Apply a hint of colour, which will give you that blushed look. Pink is the shade of the season. So use pink for the lips and always use oil-based cosmetics in the monsoons.

    Shoes:
Never wear leather shoes in the monsoons, as they tend to smell a lot. Keep a spare pair of shoes in your office. Always wear plastic sandals ehile traveling and change them once you reach office. Open toe sandals, especially in black, brown, beige, blue and grey works well too.
