Thread: Strive for perfection??? why?

  1. #1
Often it strikes onto my mind that when 100% perfection is a fantasy and no one or nothing could be 100% perfect, then we always strive for perfection? And if so, what is the limit of that perfection and where can we stop our endless journey of attaining 100% perfection? Would like to know your views on this particular aspect. Thanks.

The word, "perfection" derives from the Latin "perfectio", and "perfect" — from "perfectus." These expressions in turn come from "perficio" — "to finish", "to bring to an end." "Perfectio(n)" thus literally means "a finishing", and "perfect(us)" — "finished", much as in grammatical parlance ("perfect tense").

Many modern languages have adopted their terms for the concept of "perfection" from the Latin: the French "parfait" and "perfection"; the Italian "perfetto" and "perfezione"; the English "perfect" and "perfection"; the Russian "???????????" (sovyershenniy); the Croatian "dovershiti"; the Czech "dokonalost"; the Slovak "dokonaly" and "dokonalost"; the Polish "doskona?y" and "doskona?o??."

The genealogy of the concept of "perfection" reaches back beyond Latin, to Greek. The Greek equivalent of the Latin "perfectus" was "teleos." The latter Greek expression generally had concrete referents, such as a perfect physician or flutist, a perfect comedy or a perfect social system. Hence the Greek "teleiotes" was not yet so fraught with abstract and superlative associations as would be the Latin "perfectio" or the modern "perfection." To avoid the latter associations, the Greek term has generally been translated as "completeness" rather than "perfection."...

The idea of perfection as transcendental, fell away; only worldly perfection counted. The idea that perfection was a matter of grace, also fell by the wayside; man himself must strive for it, and if a single man could not accomplish it, then perhaps mankind could...

The idea of human perfectibility had, however, become more comprehensive. Man would attain greater perfection, in the sense that he would live more rationally, healthily, happily, comfortably. But there was no adequate term for this new conception, as the term "perfection" had a moral coloring, while the new goal was more intellectual, physical and social...

Does perfection exist? What is the true meaning of perfection. And why do so many people try to be perfect if the concept does not exist. As much as we want everything in our lives to be perfect. Perfection does not exist. If you asked me to define perfection I would tell you in my eyes perfection is trying your best and taking each day one day at time.

What is perfection? Is anyone close to it? Since defects are natural, they should be considered perfections, too. How can we make our defects into perfections?

All people have defects, but saints and sages can accept their defects. Most people dwell on their own defects. If people had a positive viewpoint like saints and sages do, then they would see perfection around them, too. Instead, most people like to think of things as “wrong” or “ a problem”, which means they are using their human mind or mind of perception.

The very fact that everything is changing is a sign that we all strive for perfection, knowingly or unknowingly.

But bear in mind that its God who is the Perfection and only He alone is The Perfect One. The Perfect is just another glorious name of the One.

Advaita Siddhantam says that the Atma (soul) present in
your body is a piece of Paramatma (infinite soul, Almighty).
Almighty is eternal. Almighty is Omnipotent. Almighty
is infinite. Only Almighty is absolutely perfect. How can the
finite obtain the absolute perfection of the infinite.

We only strive to improve our perfection time after time.
That gives us self satisfacation and self confidence.

Well, it is true that perfection does not exist..nobody is perfect but there r people that are in better positions than others and thats because they work hard, strive more than others, which is why they r in a better position. We strive 4 perfection because it is in our nature to be the best we can, the best possible

    Well Choosen topic,Sikander.

Perfection is a fantasy ,fantasy for those who always come across people in a state better than their own.Its one of the founding stones of development today.Peopel strive to have good standards of living etc.

Perfection is an ideal, hence not possible to attain. But you can always minimise the distance between the things you wish for by working much harder.

Perfection in singular fields is possible.A person can be perfect in one thing or other.

There are several illeffects of being a prefectionist. For eg if it would be a prefectionist cum housewife, the lady would be busy undoing a scratch rather give time to her family. My point being the person will miss somewhere else.

Thanks Mytones . I do agree that 100% perfection is a fantasy and being perfectionist is a nightmare too. A perfectionist cannot remain in peace. What I got an idea about perfection is that its a fantasy though every level of improvements sharpens us. Yet, the gap also widens with every level of perfection that we have already attained. This might be due to change of time, change of conviction, change of technology and change of new environment. So, the level of perfection changes with time and every moment it has tendency to get changed. And probably that the demand of being perfectionist. Its like a mirage in the desert that we try to go after it, but its only an image and nothing else. However, the more we move forward, the more we are equipped with new thoughts and new horizons. It is better that we don't achieve 100% perfection, otherwise there will be a complete standstill to new inventions and discovery and our progress will come to a sad halt. It is said that necessity is the mother of invention. So, to strive for 100% perfectison is a necessity (as friendlygal says that we always put our effort to be the best) and this necessity only prompst us to go for inventions towards achieving 100% perfection in all attributes of our life.

I agree that perfection is multi-dimensional. There is a saying in Hindi-
"Kuch paane keliye kuch khonaa hei". One who strives towards perfection
in one field is bound to loose in others. That is also so because the energy
available to any one is limited.

What I have quoted from sources on the net also coincide with my views
about perfection. There is nothing like 100 % perfection in any field.
I am retired professor. I have chosen a very narrow field for my research.
Finally, I published more research papers than any one else in that field.
That too without going to any developed country or using high tech
equipment or super computers. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers
keep a record of who published how many papers in each of the academic
fields. They have chosen me as an expert to adjudicate papers submitted
to their journal. It was just the beginning of my learning.

When I switched away from engineering to ancient texts of India,
I found a totally different field of learning. The more I read, I found that
there is more to read and understand. Then I understood that Almighty
represents infinite knowledge. There is enough to learn for any person
using his entire life time - also for persons of any number of generations.

Incidentally, since you mentioned about inventions, I have written an
article about scientific inventions in ancient India. However, there are
many more which I could not include in my paper:

Due to space problem, only part of the paper is available there.

@ VS Prasad - Sir, Kindly accept my deepest regards at the outset. I am indeed delighted to know your views and will certainly go through all your work in a phased manner.

You are so true, Sir, there are enough unearthed areas which the Almighty Has Bestowed on us and the more we dig into into, more we get and I am sure this digging will be an unending process as well as our learning too.

Would be eager to know more about you and your views on different topics and I am sure it will not be confined only to "Perfection".

On Perfection, I would thank you to have shared your invaluable opinion and it speaks volume of your intellectuality. I have seen your other posts and topics too and I have no hesitation in saying they are amongst the best posted in this forum. Your association to this forum will make this forum even richer as far as healthy debate and knowledge sharing are concerned.

    Thank you for your appreciation.

At our university where I worked as professor, other teachers used to say
"A student is a student for a limited period of time, but a teacher is a student
for a life time". It may not apply to other educational institutions like
degree colleges, but is very much needed for teachers at higher education
    institutions.

It is only after retirement from my job that I started using the internet
and reading the opinions of the youths on various aspects. It is very
heartening to know that some of them like you are interested in higher
    knowledge.

I have posted one thread on 'soul mates' - I want your opinion on it:

I have posted two of my articles in my blogs given below:

I am preparing two more articles. I will let you know after I complete them.
