Before you rush to a doctor for your sprained ankle, flexed knee or muscle strain of your arm, you might want to try out these cold or hot remedies.

Cold:
Those suffering from sprain get immediate relief with ice cubes. Fill a bag with ice cubes and place it on the affected area and wait for the swelling to come down. Wet towels can also be used, along with the ice-filled bag for immediate relief. If ice is not available, then place a packet of frozen vegetables over the area. A “cold pack” not only helps to bring down the swelling, it also prevents strain to the nearby muscles.

Hot:
Pour a handful of Epsom salt (available at departmental stores) into a trough of hot water (not boiling hot) and soak the sprained area in this water. You can dry the area later and bandage it.

See a doctor immediately if neither of the two home remedies bring you relief. And once checked by a doctor, take enough rest and try not to force a recovery.
