Thread: the Secret of Slimming? - The personalized diet

What do doctors say? In order to lose weight a personalized diet is necessary (developed by an endocrinologist or a nutritional doctor) and also a lot of physical exercise.

The nutritional advisor can cost you $ 250 per hour. You go to the restaurant with the personal advisor that will suggest you a turkey scallop with boiled potatoes instead of cordon bleu (480 calories instead of 927); or to replace the salami pizza with a vegetarian one (540 calories, not 934) and as a desert, a blueberry sherbet (213 calories) instead of an ice cream with chocolate and milk, with its 500 calories.

But the nutritional counsel does not limit just to the ingested calories; this is also about advices on the lifestyle. The objective is to change the feeding habits of the clients and replace them with a personalized program that allows reaching the ideal weight without experiencing hunger. Individual coaching, slimming programs fitted to any person, hunger inhibitors that act on the brain and optimized foods depending on the genetics of the client are the fields tackled by the nutritional counsel.

Nutritionists and doctors are increasingly doubting the results of the traditional diets or the rigorous ones, or of the slimming drugs, natural or not. Many researches have shown that amongst those that had followed diets, 50 % recovered the lost kilograms and 25 % gained even more weight. The yo-yo effect is typical for all the strict effects. The person loses only muscles and water, but not weight. On the long term, they do not eliminate overweight, but worsen the health estate of the individual. The Atkins diet (based on proteins and fats, without sugars) can provoke gout with strong joints pains, while the diet based on raw aliments can induce feebleness attacks and hypothermia.

The best perspectives are the modification of the feeding habits. Diets or pills do not eliminate the anxiety for eating, that's why after giving them up, the person gains weight immediately. This anxiety requires a psychological therapy.

Having a managerial position can be even more stressful in this direction. Combining business meals or dinners with strict diets results impossible. This is how the executive advisor appeared. Psychical pressure has been proven to boost the accumulation of non-desired kilograms. After 9/11, the sales of junk food (French fries and crackers) increased by 12.4 % in US. During business dinners, to go down the psychological pressure, soups or rice are better recommended than barbecue, fillet or indigestable cereals.

The physical built and the basic energy consumption (which can be 1,200 calories for one person and 2,500 for another) influence the bodyweight. The effect of the same aliment can also vary amongst persons. Genetics have a lot to say about all these. Our ancestors had to make extraordinary physical efforts to get their food, burning about 1,300 calories daily, that's why the capacity for storing fat was an advantage for them. The fat-storing genes still have the same function, but they fatten rapidly as we eat much more than our ancestors while having a sedentary life.

But the genetics of the metabolism vary a lot amongst geographical regions and human types. Some divide humans into the protein, carbohydrates and mixed groups. For example, the Eskimos ingest enormous amounts of fat but they are healthy. Inhabitants of the tropical areas can engulf enormous amounts of fruits without experiencing digestive nuisances.

These differences can affect a population when changing diet. Turks emigrated to Germany suffer more from diabetes than the average in Turkey, as they changed a diet based on fish, fruits and vegetables to one based on bread, butter and meat. The junk food turned diabetic almost all the members of the Pima tribe in US.
There are about 300-500 genes in our body responsible for the fat accumulation, while others controlling our behavior in case of stress also contribute to disrupting our body line.

The dream of the geneticists is a genetic identity card based on whose information an optimal diet could be developed so that the person will be taller and have a full physical and intellectual effectiveness. Just a blood droplet from the tip of the finger would be required by a computer to determine the current state of the metabolism and this way the patient could receive advices on its alimentation, including which food to buy for the next weeks. There are already machines that can measure the way aliments are metabolized.
