On different occasions under various circumstances, experiments have been done to determine the degree by which the meaning of communication can be changed when transmitted verbally through a series of individuals. The following is an example of what happened when an order by a colonel was transmitted down to the ranks through regular channels:
CLONEL TO BATTALION COMMANDER:
“As you know that there ‘ll be an eclipse of the sun tomorrow, something which doesn’t happen every day. From the troops on the parade ground in the field kit. This way, the men can see this extra ordinary astronomical phenomenon. I ‘ll give the necessary explanations. Of course, if it rains, we would not be able to see any thing. In that case assemble the men in the gymnasium for the routine drill”.
BATTALIAN COMMANDER TO COMPANY CAPTAINS:
“By order of the colonel, there‘ll be an eclipse of the sun tomorrow at 9:00am. The colonel ‘ll explain himself. Something which doesn’t happen every day. If it rains nothing can be seen in the open air and the field kit”.
CAPTAIN TO LIEUTENANTS:
“By the order of the colonel, tomorrow at 9:00am in field kit, the eclipse of the sun inaugurated. The colonel ‘ll give necessary explanation incase it rains in the gymnasium, something which doesn’t happen every day”.
LIEUTENANT TO 2ND LIEUTENANT:
“Tomorrow at 9:00am sharp the colonel, in a field kit,‘ll make the sun eclipse in the gymnasium, with exact explanations. Something which doesn’t happen every day”.
2ND LIEUTENANT TO THE SERGEANT:
“Tomorrow exactly at 9:00am, the eclipse of the colonel‘ll take place in field kit, because of the sun. If it is nice weather outside but rains in the gymnasium, the troops‘ll goes to parade ground. Something which doesn’t happen every day”.
SERGEANT TO THE SOLDIERS:
“Tomorrow promptly at 9:00am, the sun in the field kit,’ll eclipse of the colonel in the gymnasium. Some thing which doesn’t happen every day”.
