    Prophet's Advice

Once a man came to the Prophet Muhammad(Sallallahu eleyhi wa sallam) and said,
O Prophet of Allah, i have many bad habits.
which one of them should i give up first?

The Prophet (Sallallahu eleyhi wa sallam) said, Give up telling lies first and always speak the truth.

The man promise to do so and returned home.

At night the man was about to go out to rob. Before setting out, he thought for a moment about the promise he made with the Prophet(Sallallahu eleyhi wa sallam).

If tomorrow Prophet(Sallallahu eleyhi wa sallam) ask me where i have been, what shall i say? But nor can i lie. If tell the truth, every one start hating me and call me a robber.
I would be punished for robbing".

So the man decided not to steal that night, and gave up this bad habit.

Next the he intended to drink wine, when he was about to do so, he said to himself, what shall i say to the Prophet(Sallallahu eleyhi wa sallam), if he ask me what i did during the day?
I can not tell a lie, and if i tell the truth, people will hate me because Muslim is not allowed to drink wine".

In this way, whenever the man thought to do something wrong, he remember his promise to speak the truth all the times.

One by one, he gave up all his bad habits and became a good Muslim and a very good person.

We learn from this that lying is the root to all sins and bad habits and giving up the bad habits will help us to become better Muslim.
