The image first surfaced as an entry in an October 2002 Photoshop contest run by Worth1000.com. It was created by manipulating an actual photo of a Cornell University excavation of a mastodon skeleton.

Actually, this picture was part of a photoshop contest and the author created it by doctoring a similar picture. Somehow the picture escaped into reality with a story setup of it being discovered in saudi arabia. This picture was later forwarded to muslim newspapers to hoax them. It has been forwarded to so many people and majority of them believe it to be true.
