Over 100 ultras surrounded the building at around 2.30 am, and used dynamites for the explosion, causing roofs of the three-room school cave in.

The school's furniture was badly damaged, sources said. The school was adjacent to the Sangrampur block office which was blown up by the Maoists last week.

Senior officials reached the spot and combing operation was on in the area to arrest the ultras.

Makkah monorail work in full swing
Badea Abu Al-Naja I Arab News

FIRST OF ITS KIND: Work in progress on the 18.1-km-long monorail project near Makkah.

MAKKAH: More than 5,000 Chinese laborers, engineers and technicians are working around the clock to complete the SR6.5 billion monorail project that will link Makkah with the holy sites.

The project will be ready for use to 35 percent of its capacity by next year’s Haj season (1431-2010) and fully operational in two years time. When it reaches full capacity, the 18.1 km long railway will transport about 72,000 passengers every hour between Makkah, Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah.

The monorail project will help withdraw about 53,000 buses and other vehicles being used by pilgrims coming by land from within the Kingdom and neighboring GCC countries, a report issued by the Supreme Haj Committee said.

“The monorail will be distinguished for its speed as well as closeness to the pedestrians. It will not affect Mina’s tents. The topography of the land has been considered while designing the project,” the report said.

The China Railway Company has reinforced with concrete the foundations of the hanging bridge on which the train will be moving to avoid pedestrian crowds below. The main railway terminal will be on the Makkah-Taif Road close to Umm Al-Qura University from where railway lines extend toward Muzdalifah, Arafat and Mina.

The height of the railway will be eight meters in some areas and 10 meters in others so as to allow the smooth movement of traffic.

In addition to transporting pilgrims between Makkah and the holy sites, the train will also serve people coming to perform Umrah (minor pilgrimage) throughout the year. Makkah residents will also be able to use the train to reach the Jamarat area to throw pebbles.

There will be three railway stations in each of the holy sites and each station will have 17 brands of cars and a minimum of eight locomotives.

Five women were paraded naked, beaten and forced to eat human excrement by villagers after being branded as witches in India's Jharkhand state.
Local police said the victims were Muslim widows who had been labelled as witches by a local cleric
    .
The incident occurred on Sunday in a remote village in Deoghar district.
Correspondents say the abuse of women who are branded as witches is common, but rare footage of the incident has caused outrage across India.
Police went to Pattharghatia village after being informed about the incident by a group of villagers.
    'Possessed'
They have lodged a case against 11 villagers, including six women. Four people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

The victims were taken to a playground where hundreds had assembled to watch
    Murari Lal Meena
    Deputy police inspector general
Armed police have since been deployed to the area.
"On Sunday morning the victims were taken to a playground where hundreds had assembled to watch the ghastly incident," deputy inspector general of police Murari Lal Meena told the BBC.
"No one in the mob came forward to rescue the victims as they were being stripped and beaten up," he said.
The victims are now under police protection.
Police say that people in Pattharghatia believe that certain women in their village are possessed by a "holy spirit" that can identify those who practise witchcraft.
"These women recently identified five women from the same village as being witches who practised witchcraft and brought miseries to the area," a police official said.
Soon, an unruly mob broke into their huts, dragged them out and started beating them up.
Footage of the incident has been aired on television channels in India prompting outrage.
Hundreds of people, mostly women, have been killed in India because their neighbours thought they were witches.
Experts say superstitious beliefs are behind some of these attacks, but there are occasions when people - especially widows - are targeted for their land and property.

Blast leaves US soldier dead in Afghanistan
    Wed, 21 Oct 2009 13:24:05 GMT

US soldiers have increasingly fallen victim to the Taliban insurgents over some past few months.
Amid looming insurgency in Afghanistan, another American soldier has been killed in a roadside bomb attack in the volatile south, NATO says.

"A US service member was killed in an improvised explosive device attack in southern Afghanistan [on] October 20," NATO-led the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement.

The exact location of the bombing was not provided in the statement.

US-led NATO forces have been cracking down on Taliban militants across Afghanistan over the past months; however, their efforts have so far proven to be of no avail.

Fighting in the war-torn country has left some 420 NATO troops dead this year — the highest number of fatalities since the US-led invasion in 2001.

The mounting NATO death toll has slashed public support for the Afghan war in Europe and the US.

Afghanistan opium production reaches 6,900 tons
    Thu, 22 Oct 2009 02:08:58 GMT

Opium production rate has soared to 6,900 tons in Afghanistan in the past 10 years despite the presence of 100,000 foreign troops in the country for nearly eight years.

A report by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime said on Wednesday that Afghanistan produces 92 percent of the world's opium that has devastating global consequences.

The UN report also noted that Afghanistan's illegal opium production is worth 65 billion dollars.

The heroin and opium market feeds 15 million addicts, with Europe, Russia and Iran consuming half the supply, UNODC reported.

The UN office estimated some 15 million people take the drug each year, out of which 100,000 people die annually, warning that opium use contributes to the spread of HIV and AIDS.

The report indicated that less than two percent of the opium and heroin is seized by the local authorities before it leaves Afghanistan.

The Afghanistan-Pakistan border region has turned into the world's largest free-trade zone in anything and everything that is illicit, from drugs and weapons to even people and migrants, added the UNODC study.

The report added that Afghanistan has a stockpile of enough opium to supply global demand for two years underlining the need to locate and destroy these stocks urgently.

Karzai hints US is not a reliable partner
    Mon, 26 Oct 2009 06:55:23 GMT

    Afghan President Hamid Karzai
As Afghan President Hamid Karzai is waiting for a second round of votes, he has blamed the US and Western countries for the eight-year-old conflict in his country.

"Is the United States a reliable partner with Afghanistan? Is the West a reliable partner with Afghanistan?" Karzai said in an interview with CNN on Sunday.

"Have we received the commitments that we were given? Have we been treated like a partner?" he added, challenging the true meaning of partnership.

After the first round of the presidential election in August, the Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC) discarded up to 1.3 million votes as fraudulent.

When Karzai's votes came down to the 50 percent required for outright victory, he agreed to a run-off vote set for November 7.

Karzai said a partnership to him was "where Afghan lives are respected, where Afghan property is respected, where the Afghan traditions are respected, where we know the direction we are moving toward."

The Afghan president has repeatedly questioned efficiency of international troops in dealing with the Taliban in his country during the long notorious war.

He has been critical of high numbers of civilian deaths in US air strikes and President Barack Obama's unresolved review of US strategy for the eastern country.

In a daring revelation, Karzai earlier claimed that based on unconfirmed reports, unknown army helicopters have been taking gunmen to northern provinces overnight for about five months.

Later, diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Press TV that the British army has been relocating Taliban insurgents from southern Afghanistan to the north by providing transportation means.

Since the US-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, the country has been the scene of a bloodbath of ordinary destitute Afghans as well as international troops.

Washington invaded Afghanistan under the pretext of killing or capturing those who attacked the World Trade Centre in September 11, 2001. The US says the mission that has been pursued with a number of other powerful nations, has so far failed to kill or arrest the main militant commanders.

Copter crash kills 4 US soldiers in Afghanistan
    Mon, 26 Oct 2009 04:19:51 GMT

Four US troops are killed in a midair collision of two helicopters in Afghanistan.
Four US troops have been killed and two others injured after two helicopters collided in southern Afghanistan, according to the US military.

The crash occurred on Monday morning, the military said in a statement.

US military spokesman Col. Wayne Shanks said he did not have other details about the cause of the incident.

The injured were evacuated to hospitals inside Afghanistan, the Associated Press reported.

Earlier on Saturday, a US service member was killed in a roadside bomb in the southern part of the war-torn country, making October the deadliest month for US forces.

This year has been the deadliest year for US-led foreign forces since the US-led invasion of the country in 2001. So far, 34 American troops have been killed in October.
