The telethon transmission of Geo TV (that lasted for three-and-a-half hours) with Indian film star Amir Khan and Pakistani cricketer Imran Khan made a great contribution for the cause of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital, raising a total of Rs 80 million.

The two chief guests-Amir Khan and Imran Khan-discussed important issues at this unique programme, and a number of people from different countries, including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, the United States and Dubai, made phone calls and paid glowing tributes to Amir Khan and Imran Khan for their devotion to the cause of treating cancer patients. These telephone callers announced their donations for Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital.

The programme was conducted by Abdur Rauf, whereas Amina Haque, Salman Ahmed, Nadim Jaffery, Yousuf Salahuddin, Umer Sharif and Samina Pirzada also took part in the transmission in order to assist Imran Khan and Amir Khan.

In the transmission, the renowned Indian heart-throb, Amir Khan, also replied to the questions of the telephone callers and threw light on different subjects, such as acting, direction and production. He also expressed his thoughts on Hollywood and the trends of filmmaking and style of acting and directing there.

Replying to a question about his film titled, ‘Rising’, Amir Khan said the story discussed the role of a leader of the freedom struggle, Mungal Panday. He said the story of Panday attracted him, for he saw a similarity in the social and economic conditions (in the past and the present). He contended that Panday and his companions had struggled against the then East India Company, whereas the people of different countries, such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and Chechnya, were struggling against America.

Imran Khan, while comparing the health conditions in different countries, said that cancer treatment in the United States is very expensive and for the same amount of money that US hospitals charge to treat 1,000 cancer patients, a complete cancer hospital could be set up in Pakistan.

Geo TV also held a painting competition and the kid who secured first position was awarded a painting signed by Amir Khan and Imran Khan. They appreciated the role of Geo TV and Jang Group for telecasting the telethon transmission that assisted them in their fund raising campaign and also gathered about Rs80 million during such a (two days) short span of time.

Umer Sharif suggested that the actors and the directors of Pakistan and India should make a joint effort and produce a film for the assistance of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital
