Sven-Goran Eriksson insisted his England side did not deserve to go out of the World Cup to Portugal on Saturday. In his last game in charge, the Swede watched as ten-man side slumped to a 3-1 shoot-out defeat in a repeat of their Euro 2004 exit.

"We are out of the tournament and that hurts. I don't think we deserved to lose," said Eriksson, whose side played for almost an hour with ten man after Wayne Rooney was sent off.

"We did very well. In the second half we started to control the game like we hoped to do. I think we held up very well."

Eriksson - who will be succeeded by assistant Steve McClaren after five-and-a-half years in the job - insisted that spot-kicks had been part of the training ground regime.

"Losing once again on penalties, I'm really sorry about that," he said. "We practice penalties so much so I don't know what more you can do about that
